OLD TOWN – Lyle M. Campbell, 91, beloved wife for 73 years of Clyde “Soup” Campbell, died peacefully Aug. 21, 2013, at an Orono health care facility, after a 15 year battle with Huntington’s disease. She was born March 13, 1922, in Greenville Junction, a daughter of Collin W. and Sylvia L. (Clark) McEachern.
Lyle graduated from Greenville High School where she participated in cheerleading and basketball. During her summers she worked at her uncle’s store and at a restaurant on Sugar Island, Moosehead Lake. She met her future husband in 1937 at the Chateau in Bangor and three years later they were married. She graduated from Beal College, Bangor, and was employed in the Department of Veterinary Science, University of Maine, for over 30 years. Following their marriage they resided in Old Town where she was very active in community and civic events including a life member of the Eastern Star, the Jaycee’s Wives Club, Omega Club, and Old Town YMCA. She participated in many UMaine fitness programs and was a life swimmer. She enjoyed playing Bridge, Ballroom dancing, traveling, and the beach. An avid UMaine Hockey fan, she and her husband have held continuous season tickets and also traveled to several Frozen Fours.
She is survived by her loving husband, Clyde “Soup” Campbell of Old Town; four children, Barbara Hume and her husband, Andrew, of Veazie, Jane Brann and her husband, Joe, of Enfield, Bruce Campbell of Orland, and James Campbell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Milford; nine grandchildren, Mark Hume and his wife, Lisa, Eric Hume and his wife, Christine, Scott Hume and his wife, Ylva, Jon Hume, Jennifer Ireland and her husband, Keven, Julie Ireland and her husband, Sean, Amy Campbell and her husband, Jason Merriam, Justin Climo, Hilary Campbell and Taylor Campbell; 13 great-grandchildren; a special friend and caregiver, Irene Thomas; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five siblings, Joseph Earl McEachern, Gail Roberts, Carl McEachern, Collin Neal McEachern and Pearl Turpen.
A Memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Old Town United Methodist Church. A gathering will follow at the Campbell residence, Sargent Drive, Old Town. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Old Town YMCA, 472 Stillwater Ave., Old Town, ME 04468; Brann-Campbell Scholarship Fund, UMaine Foundation, care of Daniel Williams, 2 Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469; or to the Old Town Girl Scout Troop No. 1123.
