BANGOR AND GULFPORT, FLA. – Orrin Henry ‘Mike’ Smith passed away Sept. 12, 2013, at Suncoast Hospice in Gulfport, Fla., surrounded by his children. He was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Bangor, son of Linwood and Hazel Smith.
He was educated in Bangor schools and spent his early years at the family homestead on Outer Essex St. After graduating from King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy, he was proud to serve as part of the engineering crew on the N.S. Savanna, worlds first nuclear powered Merchant ship. He returned to Bangor and started his family with the late Mary Smith. He worked many years as chief engineer and assistant administrator at St. Joseph Hospital. Following his years at St. Joseph’s, he started a new career as the areas Westville Home distributor, delivering turn key home packages to customers throughout the region. His love of the sea called him back and he sailed the remainder of his working career, retiring as Chief Engineer for American Hawaiian Cruise Lines. He spent his later years in Jacksonville and Gulfport, Fla.
He is survived by his children, Paul of Holden, Andrew of Corinna and Susan of So. Pasadena, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no services and his remains to be scattered at sea.
