HARTLAND – Verna H. Sears, was called home to be with Jesus, Oct. 6, 2013, while in the arms of her loving husband. Verna was born in Washburn, the sixth child of Mildred (Wheaton) and Vernon C. Hall.
She grew up in Easton, then moved to Springfield, Mass., where she worked at the Kresge lunch counter before marrying the love of her life John T. Sears of Orono, in 1956. They moved to Somers, Conn., and for seven years she was a live-in caregiver for an elderly gentleman. After that she helped her husband build their dream home where they lived for 20 years. They then resided in Bloomfield, Conn., until their retirement in 2000.
Verna was a long time member of the Wesleyan Church, Springfield, Mass., where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer and Women’s Missionary President. She was a Charter Member of the Ellington, Conn., Wesleyan Church where for many years she served as Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer and Women’s Missionary President.
After moving to Bloomfield, Conn., she served as Vice President and Treasurer for NESCOM, INC , a small tele-communications company she and her husband established and operated until their retirement. After retirement Verna and John enjoyed summers at their “On Golden Pond” in Hartland, and winters in the warmth of the sun in Phoenix.
Verna is survived by John, her husband of 57 years; and was predeceased by her siblings, Magal Riley, Alberta Leake, Edgar, Eugene, and Ronald Hall. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Floyd Riley of Oak Grove, Va.; nieces, Marie MaComber of Colonial Beach, Va., Rose Norris of Opolis, Kan., Pamela Martin of Cummings, Ga., Lillian Hall of South Paris, Faith Jones of Turner, Mildred Foster of Hebron, Arlene Hall of Barring, Mary Smith of Snowhill, Md., and Jennifer Hall of Bangor; and nephews, Larry Hall and his wife, Sandy, of Levant, Dwayne Hall and his wife, Donna, of Holden, Wayne Hall and his wife, Janet, of Springfield, Mass., Rodger Hall of Springfield, Mass., Samuel Leake and his wife, Marsha, of Baltimore, James Leake of Virginia, Charles Hall of Milo, Vernon Hall of Jay, and Edgar Hall of Bagalusa, La. She is also survived by several great-nieces and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at Brookings-Smith, Orono Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. The Rev. Steve Sinclair, pastor of River City Wesleyan Church, will be officiating.
