BUCKSPORT – Charlene Ann Grant, 73, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus, surrounded by family on Oct. 17, 2013, at her home in Bucksport. She was born Feb. 1, 1940, in Calais, the daughter of Stephen and Beulah (Lee) Getchell.
Charlene grew up in Calais and graduated from Calais High School in 1958. She went on to earn a Bachelors degree from the University of Maine. On Aug. 19, 1961, Charlene married Ralph Grant with whom she would spend the best 53 years of her life. Her chosen career path in radiology lead to an exceptional 39 year career at Eastern Maine Medical. During her tenure she formed the radiology technician program at Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute; she ultimately rose to lead the radiology department. Her life’s mission was caring for others and brought her the greatest joy. Her green thumb with flowers was legendary and culinary expertise with whoopie pies were unmatched.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Sheldon Getchell. She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph Grant of Bucksport; a son, Stephen Grant and his wife, Elizabeth, also of Bucksport; and four grandchildren, Nikki Bicknell, Melissa Thompson, and Robert and Seth Rose. She will also be greatly missed by three sisters, Hazel Carlow of Beltchertown, Mass., Sandra Lindsay of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, and Linda Archer and her husband, Raymond, of Hampden; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Matt Shaw of Brooks Pentecostal Church officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service.
