WHITEFIELD, N.H. – George Matthew Cox, 76, formerly of Baileyville, died quietly at Morrison Nursing Care Center in Whitefield, N.H. He had been a resident of the Sartwell Assisted Living Facility for the past seven years. George was born in 1937 in Baileyville, a son of Kenneth M. Cox and Margaret E. (Chisolm) Cox.
He graduated from Woodland High School in 1956 then completed a 2 year course of study at Coyne Electrical Technical School in Boston, Mass. George worked as a construction electrician that took him to various jobsites in New England, mostly in Maine and New Hampshire. He resided in Baileyville for most of his life while holding a fondness for a small Downeast community in Marion. In 2006, he and his late wife moved to New Hampshire. George enjoyed dabbling in the stock market and watching people. He enjoyed hunting and trapping in his earlier years. He enjoyed conversations about trapping and continued to read magazines on the subject up until he could no longer read. He loved being a part of family events and celebrations. George was a member of the St. James Roman Catholic Church in Baileyville, a third degree brother of the Knights of Columbus; and a member of Local Union No. 1254 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
George was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Margaret Cox and by his wife, Barbara O. Cox. Surviving family include two brothers, David Cox of Baileyville and Peter D. Cox and wife, Cheryl, of Portland, Ore.; and stepchildren, Aaron R. Cox and wife, Sandy of Littleton, N.H; Samuel P. Cox of Aurora, Colo. and Norma Lee (Cox) Gunn and husband, Patrick of Hampden. He leaves many nephews and nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of which he watched grow to this present time.
Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Ross Funeral Home, 282 West Main St., Littleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Mark Dollard at St. Rose of Lima Church, 9:30 a.m. Thursday Nov. 7, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Littleton.
