STONINGTON – Marjorie E. Billings, 89, of Stonington, died at a Bangor nursing home on Nov. 15, 2013. She was born May 12, 1924, in Somerville, Mass., to Wallace R. and Rebecca (Kimball) Carter.
She grew up and attended school in Somerville. Marge attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, upon graduation from Somerville High School. She then enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and was stationed in Boston. Marge married Winfield T. Billings in 1945 and they lived in Somerville for five years, spending summers in Stonington. In 1951, they moved to Stonington and then moved to Ellsworth, in 1971, where Marge made many friends through church activities and her work as a waitress. In 1993, they moved back to Stonington to enjoy their retirement.
Marge is survived by sons, Lawrence and his wife, Jane, of Stonington, Mark and his wife, Jeannie, of Ellsworth, David and his fiancée, Sharon Bates, of Brewer and Burnham and Scott of Ellsworth. She is survived by daughters, Rebecca Thompson, Susan Thompson-Weed and her husband, Raymond, of Stonington, and Wendy Young and her husband, Mike, of Ellsworth. Marge is survived by 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews. Marge will also be missed by special friends, Bob and Dick Powers of Deer Isle and Kathy Billings of Bangor. In addition to her husband of 66 years, Marge was predeceased by her parents; brother, Wallace K. Carter; and sister, Ruth Alice (Carter) Briggs. She was also predeceased by son-in-law, Allen Thompson.
Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Bragdon Funeral Home, Stonington. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Sunset Restoration Church. Interment will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s research. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Inc., Stonington.
