BELFAST, Maine — Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office would like local drivers to know that in the last 30 days, his officers have responded to 43 car-deer accidents.

“It does seem like an awful lot,” he said. “I don’t know if the deer population is higher this year or if they’re on the move more.”

Drivers should be aware that most of the car-deer collisions have happened after dark, Trafton said.

“If they see one deer, they’re almost assured there’s going to be another one coming,” he said. “If one crosses just in front of you, it doesn’t mean you’re in the clear.”

One spot where there seems to be a high likelihood of seeing a deer is near Schartner Farms on Knox Ridge Road in Thorndike, he said.
