ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Sedgwick man has begun serving a sentence for an unlawful sexual contact conviction that will keep him in prison for two and a half years.

Timothy Jay Smith, 36, pleaded guilty in October to three counts of unlawful sexual contact for incidents that occurred in Franklin in May, July and September of 2012, according to documents filed at the Hancock County Superior Court clerk’s office. The incidents involved a girl who was under the age of 10, court records indicate.

Smith began serving his sentence on Dec. 31, according to Hancock County Jail records.

Smith received an overall sentence of seven years in prison with all but two and a half years suspended, and will have to serve eight years of probation upon his release. As part of his probation, Smith will be barred from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16, court records indicate.
