Charlotte reclaims Hornets

Twelve years after the losing their original nickname to New Orleans, Charlotte’s NBA franchise is once again the Hornets.

The Hornets officially returned to Charlotte on Tuesday. Gone are the Bobcats in what the team called a re-branding.

The Hornets will unveil their new uniforms for next season on June 19. The franchise will participate in the NBA Summer League in July as the Hornets.

Charlotte entered the NBA as an expansion team and played as the Hornets from 1988 to 2002. After the franchise left, the NBA returned to Charlotte in 2004 as the Bobcats and used that name from 2004 to 2014. New Orleans dropped the Hornets’ name last year in favor of the Pelicans.

The team also will reclaim the statistics from 1988 to 2002 to be merged with the team records and stats from the 10 years as the Bobcats.

Winston not present for hearing

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston did not attend a university disciplinary hearing on Tuesday for two teammates as part of a 2012 rape case.

Defensive back Ronald Darby and defensive lineman Chris Casher could be disciplined as a result of multiple allegations for violating the school’s code of conduct for their involvement in the Dec. 7, 2012, incident in which Winston was not charged with felony sexual assault after the state attorney cited a lack of evidence.

Reports citing Winston attorney, Baine P. Kerr, indicated that the Heisman Trophy winner also was expected to testify on Tuesday, but that proved not to be the case.

Winston is a pitcher for the Florida State baseball team, which is in Greensboro, N.C., this week for the conference tournament.

Casher and Darby are Winston’s roommates and expected to be contributors to Florida State’s defense this fall.

Pacers’ Turner cleared to play

The Indiana Pacers entered Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat on Tuesday night with a little more depth.

Guard-forward Evan Turner will be available after sitting out the series opener because of strep throat.

Turner, acquired during the season from the Philadelphia 76ers, practiced with the Pacers on Monday and participated in the shootaround on Tuesday morning in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Turner has yet to make a major impact in the playoffs, averaging just 3.5 points in 13 postseason games.

Blackhawks’ Shaw may play

Forward Andrew Shaw skated with the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday and could be ready to return for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Kings.

Shaw had 20 goals and 19 assists in the regular season. He was sidelined by a lower-body injury in Game 1 of the conference semifinals series against the Minnesota Wild. The high-energy third line forward and center has been nagging teammates and his girlfriend about getting back on the ice since he went down.
