FREEPORT, Maine — Maine Clammers Association President Chad Coffin was issued a summons this week for harvesting undersized quahogs.
Coffin, 42, of Freeport was allegedly seen digging near Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park by Marine Warden Tom Kay around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1. When Kay approached Coffin and inspected his catch, he found 15 undersized quahogs, Freeport Police Chief Gerry Schofield said.
Coffin did not respond to a request for comment.
He recently told The Tri-Town Weekly, however, that Freeport does not need a marine warden.
“We need a shellfish coordinator, not a warden,” Coffin reportedly said. “Enforcement is not the problem.”
Freeport’s ordinances dictate a zero tolerance policy for undersized quahogs, Schofield said. Some shellfish have an allowable error rate of up to 10 percent.
