PORTLAND, Maine — Two-time mayor, longtime city councilor and former school committee member Cheryl Leeman announced Tuesday she will not seek re-election to Portland City Council this fall.

“Although I have enjoyed my work on the City Council, I am calling it quits,” Leeman said in a release. “I plan to spend more time with family and friends, travel and enjoy life.”

Leeman was first elected to her District 4 seat in the East Deering section of the city 30 years ago, after she served a three-year term on the school committee.

Leeman also headed the Portland office of former Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and said Snowe’s decision to step down contributed to her own decision not to run again for the council.

“Having retired from the office of Sen. Olympia Snowe a little over a year ago, after 18 years, and having survived breast cancer, has given me pause to think about what to do with the rest of my life,” Leeman said.
