ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local man died Tuesday morning after suffering an apparent medical condition while driving along Water Street, police said.

Edward McFarland, 71, who split his time between Ellsworth and Hulls Cove, was pronounced dead at the scene, Ellsworth police Lt. Harold Page said.

Page said McFarland has a history of medical problems.

According to Page, McFarland suffered the medical episode around 8:30 a.m. and his van left the road and struck a utility pole before hitting the rear of a wrecker.

Nearly 1,000 Emera Maine customers in Hancock County lost power Tuesday morning because of the accident.

According to Emera Maine’s website, 927 customers lost power shortly after 8:30 a.m.

Emera Maine workers replaced the pole and power was restored to all customers by 1 p.m., according to a spokesman.
