New restaurant at Hollywood Casino

Hollywood Casino in Bangor is unveiling its new restaurant, Celebrity Bar & Grill, a sit-down eatery scheduled to open to the public on Wednesday, July 9. The restaurant will feature an American bar-and-grill atmosphere and menu, including burgers, sandwiches, wings, appetizers, seafood, steak and pasta entrees. It also will feature a bar with a variety of beers on tap, signature drinks and seven TVs showing regional and national sports. A special offering on the menu will be the Paul Bunyan Challenge burger, which consists of 2 pounds of Angus beef topped with a pound of bacon, four slices of cheese, a whole tomato, a head of lettuce and an onion (sliced, presumably), served on a house-baked roll with a full pound of French fries on the side. Customers who take the challenge and can finish it in under an hour will receive the massive burger for free as well as a T-shirt, their picture on the wall of fame, and local bragging rights. The Celebrity Bar & Grill is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Brewer’s Brunch

Beer and eggs are a combination only second to pizza and beer. But beer crafted a few blocks away paired with delicious brunch fare makes for a fine Sunday indeed. Hold the coffee! The second Brewer’s Brunch of the summer is this weekend at Sonny’s in Portland. This time Foundation Brewing Co. takes over the taps. Farmhouse ales brewed by Joel Mahaffey and John Bonney, former members of Bangor’s Central Street Farmhouse homebrew club, will be in heavy rotation. Savor these suds with chile rellenos and a bagel topped with lobster for the best results. Music by the Jerks of Grass should aid digestion. , Noon to 3 p.m. at Sonny’s, 83 Exchange St., Portland.

A taste of France

Longfellow Square will resemble the Eiffel Tower on Sunday when the James Beard-nominated Petite Jacqueline throws a gastronomic Bastille Day Celebration. The posh bistro will enlist some culinary help for France National Day. The Blue Rooster’s “French Connection” hot dog topped with raclette, cornichon relish, foie gras mayo and fried shallot rings kicks things off. Abigail Carroll from Nonesuch Oysters will shuck all the bivalves you can eat. There will be a crepe station, baguettes and a French wine tasting. Tres chic! From 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 190 State St., Portland, $20. Beret optional.

Community vegetables

Bangor residents without access to fresh produce can drop by the St. Joseph Hospital Community Vegetable Exchange Stand for fresh fruits and veggies at no charge on Fridays this summer. The stand is provided thanks to donations from St. Joseph employees and community members. Donations of produce and herbs can be made on Fridays at the front desk at St. Joseph Hospital before 11 a.m. or at the stand between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. It opens for the season from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 11, and continues every Friday throughout the summer. The stand is located just outside the Demaso Family Lobby on Broadway.
