SOLON, Maine — A local man was injured Sunday when his motorcycle struck a dog on the South Solon Road, police said.

Norman Fickett, 77, was heading southbound shortly before 1 p.m. when a German shepherd darted across the road, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The impact caused Fickett to lose control of his 2010 Harley-Davidson, and the bike tipped over in the road and skidded to a stop, Lancaster said.

Fickett, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike and struck the pavement, Lancaster said. The dog died from injuries suffered in the collision.

Fickett suffered back and facial injuries and was transported to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan before being LifeFlighted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Lancaster said.

It was not clear who the dog belonged to, Lancaster said. Solon firefighters assisted sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
