SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Police are crediting a Circle K clerk with taking down a man who allegedly tried to rob the South Portland convenience store Saturday morning.
Ronald Castrello, 45, of South Portland, allegedly entered the store around 5:48 a.m. Saturday, wearing a red hoodie and black ski mask, went behind the counter and demanded money. Castrello reportedly had his hand under his hoodie, implying he was armed.
The clerk, whom police have not identified, allegedly scuffled with Castrello after being grabbed by the arm. Police said the clerk was able to get Castrello in a chokehold after their scuffle caused substantial damage to the store. Castrello was still being restrained when police arrived.
In addition to a felony robbery charge, police discovered when Castrello was taken to jail he has 11 outstanding arrest warrants and is being held without bail.
While police said it is safer to comply in this situation, they said the clerk protected himself and did nothing wrong.
