Film Series
BANGOR — The Gracie Theatre at Husson University announced recently the slate of films to be screened at its third annual Documentary Film Series on Ethics. The series, presented by Nico Jenkins, lecturer in ethics and philosophy in the school of science and humanities, and the program for ethics and philosophy at Husson University, seeks to present controversial documentaries that engage the public on contemporary ethical issues. Admission is free and open to the public.
Opening the series will be “The Known Unknown” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17. Nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2013, the film follows the career of Donald Rumsfeld from his days as a congressman in the early 1960s to his role in planning the 2003 invasion of Iraq as secretary of defense.
The second film in the series, “Fed Up” narrated by Katie Couric and directed by Laurie David, producer of “An Inconvenient Truth,” will be shown at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16. The film examines the dangerous role sugar plays in the American diet.
In the spring, the series will show “Documented,” a documentary about the undocumented American journalist Jose Antonio Vargas and his fight on behalf of the estimated 11 million immigrants currently residing and working in the United States.
The series will close with “An Act of Killing,” which examines the relatively unexamined genocide perpetrated by the civilian Indonesian militia following the 1965 Suharto coup.

Relief printing workshop
BANGOR — The University Maine Museum of Art announced that it will host a Relief Printing Workshop with instructor Sally Gilbert 9 a.m.- noon Saturday, Oct. 4 and 11, at the museum.
The cost is $65 museum members and students with a UMaine ID, $75 others.
Attendees will design a hand carved linoleum block to print an edition of their own. The class will cover how to create a composition, transfer to a block, carve, pull proofs during the working process and fine tune the image on the block for pulling a final edition. Learn

The class is designed for beginners but is open to students of all levels. Previous drawing experience is helpful but not necessary.

Film auditions
BANGOR — The New England School of Communications at Husson University announced that it is beginning the casting process for a new short film, “The Endless Ends.” The original production written by Kris Bridges, a digital media specialist and video instructor at NESCom, is the story of a recovering alcoholic reflecting on his past who wants to make amends with his family before the world ends. Over the course of the film, the audience will be taken on an emotional journey that addresses youthful rebellion, midlife regret and impending death. This short movie will be completed and ready for screening in early May 2015.
Auditions are scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in the Gracie Theatre’s Black Box Theater on the building’s second level. The Gracie Theatre is located on the campus of Husson University. Auditions are open to the public and members of the Husson campus community.
