Foley to coach UNE swim team

BIDDEFORD, Maine — University of New England Director of Athletics Kim Allen has announced the appointment of Kate Foley as interim head women’s swimming coach.

A native of South Portland, Maine, Foley graduated from UNE in 2008 with a B.S. in applied exercise science and swam for the Nor’easters for two seasons after transferring from Saint Joseph’s College.

Foley has coached swimming in Westbrook and field hockey at Cheverus High School. She takes over for Kate Roy, who resigned in August to become associate director of athletics at Lyndon State College.

Koivu retires after 18 NHL seasons

Former Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks center Saku Koivu announced his retirement on Wednesday after 18 seasons in the NHL.

Koivu, 39, appeared in 1,124 regular-season NHL games and 80 Stanley Cup playoff games. He scored 255 goals and had 832 points in the regular season, and 18 goals and 59 points in the playoffs.

He was captain of the Canadiens for nine seasons, from 1999-2000 to 2008-09, becoming the first European-born player to hold that role.

Hawks cancel meeting with civil rights leaders

Civil rights leaders, already unhappy with the Atlanta Hawks, were upset further on Wednesday when their scheduled meeting with CEO Steve Koonin of the Hawks was canceled.

Rev. Markel Hutchins said Wednesday’s meeting was called off “at the last minute,” saying he received a call from Hawks spokesman Garin Narain on Tuesday night asking that it be postponed.

Civil rights leaders asked for the meeting to discuss what they called the Hawks’ “disrespect for people of color.”

The request for a meeting followed racially charged comments by co-owner Bruce Levenson and general manager Danny Ferry of the Hawks.

Former exotic dancer sues Jerry Jones

DALLAS — A former exotic dancer has filed a harassment suit seeking at least $1 million from Jerry Jones, claiming the Dallas Cowboys owner sexually assaulted her five years ago.

An attorney for Jones denied the accusations and called the lawsuit filed on Monday a “money grab.”

“These allegations are completely false,” attorney Levi McCathern said on Wednesday. The suit also accuses the Cowboys organization of intentionally covering up the incident.

Bob Suter dies at age 57

Bob Suter, a defenseman on the 1980 U.S. hockey “Miracle on Ice” team that stunningly won the Olympic gold medal in hockey, died of an apparent heart attack on Tuesday at age 57 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Suter played in all seven games during the U.S. team’s improbable run to the gold and in its shocking victory over the then-Soviet Union.

Suter was drafted in the seventh round by the Los Angeles Kings in 1977 but did not make it to the NHL during his playing career. However, his son, Ryan Suter, is now a star for the Minnesota Wild.

Warriors sign guard Barbosa

Free agent guard Leandro Barbosa signed with the Golden State Warriors, the team announced on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not released.

The 6-foot-3 Barbosa, 31, played in 20 games with the Phoenix Suns last season, averaging 7.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 18.4 minutes per game.

An 11-year NBA veteran, Barbosa owns career marks of 11.9 points, 2.3 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 23.7 minutes in 649 games (111 starts) with the Suns, Raptors, Pacers and Celtics.

Abraham leaves Cardinals

Linebacker John Abraham of the Arizona Cardinals, who sustained another in a series of concussions Monday night against the San Diego Chargers, has left the team, perhaps for good, according to media sources.

One report said Abraham, 36, has been suffering from severe memory loss for more than a year because of concussions he has sustained over course of his 15-year career.

Abraham has 133.5 career sacks, the most among active players and ninth on the all-time list, in 191 games.
