Battle of the Bands
BANGOR — Battle of the Bands, featuring Maine Street R&B Revue, Stone Doctors and Time Pilots, will take place 7-11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Cross Insurance Center. the event also will offer appetizers and a cash bar. News Center’s Kevin Mannix will serve as emcee. Proceeds from the event will benefit child and adolescent services at Acadia Hospital. Tickets are $30. NRCM Rising
BANGOR — The Natural Resources Council of Maine will launch its NRCM Rising, a fun way for Mainers in their 20s and 30s to meet-up, connect and get involved with issues facing air, land, water and wildlife. NRCM Rising will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Paddy Murphy’s Pub, where participants can meet people, enjoy food and beer, share suggestions on how to make NRCM Rising the best it can be, tell NRCM what you think about issues facing Maine’s environment, and learn how to get involved.
NRCM Rising hosts outdoor trips, presentations on issues facing Maine’s environment, social networking opportunities, a State House action day, and more.

New bridge dedicated
KENDUSKEAG — Residents of Kenduskeag held a Kenduskeag Veterans Bridge dedication ceremony on Sept. 11 to honor veterans and to celebrate freedom. Chorus members from Central Middle School in Corinth sang “God Bless America” as part of the event.
Road race, Fun Run
OLD TOWN — The Because I’m Happy and Healthy 5K Road Race and Family Fun Run will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Riverfront Park. Registration will be 7-7:45 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 8 a.m. The Family Fun Run will start at 8:15 p.m.
Entry fees are $20, $10 youth age 10-17 for the 5K Road Race; no charge for the 1-mile Family Fun Run.
Proceeds will benefit the Old Town Active Community Engagement Team.
The event is sponsored by the River Coalition-PHNP, a local Healthy Maine Partnership and the Old Town McDonald’s.
CPR, first aid course
EDDINGTON — The Eddington Fire Department will host a community CPR and first aid course 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
The “Heart Saver” course is intended for the general public and for those who want to be prepared in the event that someone requires CPR or first aid while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
The course is free, but there is a $5 charge, due the day of the class, for the CPR/first aid card. CPR pocket masks will be available for purchase. Also donations will be accepted to benefit future community events.

BANGOR — A chicken pie supper and a folk, country and soft rock music show with Nightingale will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at Bangor Grange Hall, 1192 Ohio St. The supper will be held at 5:30 p.m. for $8; the show will be at 7 p.m. for $7 or both for $13. Call 973-3976 for information.
Maine Coastal Cleanup
AREA — Join hundreds of thousands of people around world for the 29th annual International Coastal Cleanup by participating in Maine’s Coastweek Cleanup Sept. 20-27. Go to mainecoastalprogram.org to register for a cleanup location, from Kittery to Pembroke, and including Bangor.
Every piece of trash volunteers find will be tracked and included in an annual index of global marine debris to be released in 2015.
Last year, nearly 650,000 people picked up more than 12 million pounds of trash along 13,000 miles of coastline, organizers said. In Maine, volunteers found 4,519 pounds of trash in 2013.
Volunteers will collect trash from hundreds of miles of coastline, coastal rivers, coastal towns and underwater sites.

E-waste disposal day
BANGOR — Challenger Learning Center announced that it will hold an e-waste disposal day 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at its facility at 30 Venture Way.
Accepted items will be televisions (all sizes), microwave ovens, medical electronics, CPUs, monitors, copiers, printers, digital picture frames, fax machines, scanners, laptops, keyboard, mouse and other peripherals, stereos, DVD players, cell phones, remote controls, VCRs,
projectors, digital cameras, tape players, PDAs, speakers, telephones, two-way radios, answering machines, camcorders, CD players, electric typewriters, game systems, pagers.
Smoke detectors, batteries and fluorescent lights will not be accepted.
Suggested donation is $10 for the first item, $5 for each additional item.
Volunteers needed
BANGOR — The American Red Cross of Maine needs volunteers to assist in its disaster response effort, people who will help families driven from their homes by fire and who staff shelters during a larger-scale disaster, such as a widespread power outage.
“Volunteers comprise approximately 90 percent of the Red Cross staff in Maine, and their value is especially evident during a disaster,” said Danielle Hardre, disaster program manager for Penobscot, Aroostook and Piscataquis counties, in a Red Cross press release.
According to Hardre, the Red Cross responds to nearly 300 fires each year in Maine.
Disaster response training includes a disaster services overview, psychological first aid, client casework and sheltering.
Several free training classes are available for new and current volunteers.

Remembrance Walk
BANGOR — The annual Eastern Maine Medical Center Empty Arms Remembrance Walk will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Mount Hope Cemetery. Registration is at 9 a.m. Participants should meet near the cemetery’s Mount Hope entrance. The one-mile walk is meant to remember and honor those touched by the tragic death of a baby through pregnancy loss, stillbirth or in the first few months of life. The first 100 walkers who register with the minimum $15 donation will receive a T-shirt. Butterfly sponsors — sponsors with a $50 minimum donation — will have their business logo on the back of the T-shirts and will be recognized at the walk.

Thrift shop
BANGOR — The Grace United Methodist Church Saving Grace Thrift Shop, 193 Union St., is open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The shop offers gently used clothing, household items, books, crafting supplies, costumes, furniture, and odds and ends.
It also gives away food on a daily basis. Customers in need of food can choose bread, deli items, bakery items, produce and meat depending on supply. the food is given to those in need free of charge and without paperwork.
Proceeds from the thrift shop are used to help the church with its outreach ministries. For information, call the church at 942-8320.
