BREWER — Komen Maine, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure statewide affiliate, announced recently that its 2014 Bangor New Balance Survivor is Karen Economy of Hermon.
Each year, Komen Maine, in partnership with New Balance, selects a breast cancer survivor to recognize at Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, held in Portland and Bangor.
New Balance is a national series sponsor for the Race for the Cure, and has a team at each of the races.
Economy, a medical secretary at Covey Physical Therapy, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2006. As a busy mom under 50, it had been more than 10 years since she had visited the doctors. She underwent two surgeries, removal of several lymph nodes, chemotherapy and radiation. In 2012, cancer returned to her abdomen and she went through more surgery. Today, Economy has injections every four weeks, but it does not interfere with her enjoyment of life and home life.
“In addition to my incredibly supportive family and friends, every year since my diagnosis, the Race for the Cure has allowed me to celebrate life and truly feel infused with hope,” said Economy, in a Komen press release.
The Bangor race, including a survivor ceremony to recognize the women who have fought or are fighting breast cancer, will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. It will begin at the Bangor Waterfront. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.
Volunteers are needed to support the race, including assistance with registration, directing race participants through the course, and setup and cleanup of materials and supplies.
