HOLDEN, Maine — The man who served as town manager for the past seven years has retired and the search for his successor is in full swing.

Applications for John Butts’ position are due by no later than Friday and town councilors will begin reviewing them during a special meeting next Monday, Sept. 22, Interim Town Manager Sherry Murray said Tuesday.

Butts had been Holden’s town manager since the fall of 2007, when he was tapped to replace former manager Larry Varisco, who retired at that time. He came to Maine by way of Georgia, where he was employed in the public works field, Murray noted. Before that, he served in the military.

Murray said Butts will be recognized for his service to the community during the Fall Frolic, the annual town event that Butts started. Now in its fifth year, the event will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Holden Town Grounds at 570 Main Road.

The Fall Frolic, which serves as a fundraiser for the restoration of the historic town hall, offers attractions, including auctions, music, vendors and family activities.
