WINDSOR, Maine — Charges are possible in connection with an accident that sent two women to the hospital on Monday, according to police.
The driver, Janet Theriault, 61, of Augusta, not only had a suspended license but a warrant for her arrest, according to Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Theriault and her passenger, JoAnn Brann, whose age and hometown weren’t available, were traveling west on Route 17 shortly after noon when Theriault lost control of the vehicle, Reardon said.
Brann apparently had reached over to take something off Theriault’s shirt, Reardon said, which caused Theriault to take her eyes off the road.
Reardon said the van nearly hit a pickup before hitting a mailbox, going into a ditch and flipping onto the driver’s side door.
Augusta and Windsor rescue personnel managed to free the women, and both were brought to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta, Reardon said. Brann later was transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Neither woman suffered injuries considered life-threatening.
Reardon said the crash remains under investigation.
