WATERBORO, Maine — A disturbed, armed man was subdued by police Tuesday afternoon and taken to an area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office said police were called to a residence in the area of Route 202 and Goodwin Mills Road shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

King said the man, whose name was not disclosed, had been making suicidal threats, and his family had received messages from him threatening suicide. The man was alone inside the residence.

A deputy was able to observe the 29-year-old man holding a shotgun, according to King, and initial efforts to communicate with him were not successful.

After closing off the street, alerting neighbors and evacuating anybody who may have been in harm’s way, King said police attempted to communicate with the man via telephone and loudspeaker, but communication efforts again weren’t answered.

At 6:15 p.m., the man came out of the residence unarmed and was detained by deputies, King said. He was taken to an undisclosed hospital for an evaluation. Nobody was injured in the incident.
