WARREN, Maine — Charges will be brought against the driver involved in a truck accident who fled and resisted being apprehended after being found bloodied in a nearby park, according to police.
Samuel Merrifield, 28, of Warren was apprehended by Deputy Nathaniel Jack in woods next to Payson Park soon after the crash, which occurred at about 10 p.m. Thursday on Route 90, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.
Deputies Jack and Arthur Smith were at a parking lot at the intersection of Routes 90 and 131 when a motorist stopped and alerted them of a crash down the road. The deputies responded and found witnesses who said the driver of the truck, which rolled and crashed, had been helped out of the vehicle and then ran into the woods.
Jack found a man fitting the description, wearing the clothes described by witnesses. There also was blood on the man. He was uncooperative and would not provide any information other than denying he was the driver of the truck. The deputy handcuffed Merrifield, who was escorted by the town’s emergency medical service and the officer to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
The man’s injuries were not serious. Charges are forthcoming, the chief deputy said.
