THOMASTON, Maine — Bail was set Monday at $5,000 cash for a Thomaston man accused of assaulting a woman who later told police she feared she was going to be killed.
Robert E. Crowe Jr. was arrested Friday by Thomaston police for felony domestic violence assault and taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland. Crowe made his initial court appearance Monday afternoon in Rockland District Court.
Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald asked that bail on Crowe be set at $10,000 cash. Defense attorney for the day Kimberly Richardson said that Crowe only had $440 in cash and asked that bail not be set any greater than that amount. She said Crowe’s only source of income was disability payments.
Fernald said the victim was injured and had told a police officer that if he had not arrived when he did, she feared she would have been dead. The prosecutor also pointed out that Crowe had a domestic violence assault conviction last year, a reckless conduct conviction in 1999 and drug convictions in 2004 and 2006.
The Friday charge was a felony because of the prior assault conviction.
Richardson said the woman’s injuries were slight bruises on her arms and legs.
Judge Susan Sparaco set bail at $5,000 cash.
