ROCKLAND, Maine — Demolition of a former fish processing plant in Rockland was nearly complete Tuesday as developers make room for a new complex that will allow for larger pleasure boats to be built in the city.
The building was constructed in 1900, and the former O’Hara Corp. operated a fish processing plant at the site from the 1930s until 1990.
O’Hara has received approval to construct a new nearly 18,000-square-foot building on the same footprint as the old building. The estimated cost of the project is $901,000.
The new building at the site would be the centerpiece of a joint venture between O’Hara and Sabre Yachts. Company officials have indicated that Sabre Yachts will be built in the Rockland Industrial Park at the North End Composites facility. North End builds Back Cove Yachts at the Rockland plant and is a sister company to Sabre Yachts of Casco. The new building will allow Sabre to build larger boats that can be finished off at the O’Hara facility and then delivered to customers by sea.
O’Hara also will use the new building for storage of larger boats and for boat repairs.
