PORTLAND, Maine — A crew member of the Nova Star ferry died Monday afternoon as the ship was en route from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, to Portland.
Dennis Bailey, spokesman for Nova Star Cruises and FleetPro, which manages the ship’s onboard operations and hotel, confirmed the man’s death Tuesday afternoon, but declined to release any details.
“On behalf of the owners, staff and crew of Nova Star we wish to express our deepest condolences to the crew member’s family and friends and thank our crew for their extraordinary efforts in response to this medical emergency,” Mark Amundsen, president and CEO of Nova Star Cruises, said in a statement.
According to Bailey, the ship’s medical crew and nurses unsuccessfully attempted to revive the off-duty crew member, who had collapsed. The man died about 3:30 p.m.
The Maine office of the chief medical examiner is investigating the death, and Bailey said the companies are fully cooperating.
