BELFAST, Maine — An early morning crash at the intersection of Route 7 and Head of the Tide Road rattled the neighborhood and left more than 800 customers without power in Belfast, Waldo, Knox and Morrill.

The accident happened about 5 a.m., when a 2001 GMC Savana van evidently missed a corner and hit a utility pole, according to the Belfast Police Department.

Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said that the van was registered to Noah Hall of Bangor and that there were three people in the vehicle. Initial police reports indicated that none of the three was injured in the accident, he said.

A woman who lives on Head of the Tide Road but didn’t want to share her name said that her family heard screeching tires followed by a loud crash and a flash of bright light. After the flash, the power went out.

Gail Rice of Central Maine Power said that a work crew from the utility company arrived at the scene but had to wait for emergency responders to finish their job. They put up a new pole and have spent the morning transferring the equipment to it.
