HOLDEN, Maine — A Dedham woman suffered head, hip, leg and back injuries when she was struck by a car late Wednesday afternoon while running across Main Road, a Holden police official said.
Alyssa Libbey, 19, was running south, across four lanes of traffic, from G&M Family Market to the Dorsey Furniture store parking lot when she was struck about 4:15 p.m. by a small Chevrolet sedan driven by Lindsey Lewis, 25, of Southwest Harbor, Holden police Sgt. Eugene Fizell said Wednesday night.
Fizell said traffic was moderate on that section of highway when Libbey ran between vehicles across three lanes of travel and was not seen by Lewis, who was traveling in the fourth, or through lane, until just before impact.
“Ms. Lewis slammed on her brakes in a panic stop, striking the left side of Ms. Libbey, who turned slightly, [with] the front driver’s corner of the car,” Fizell said.
“Ms. Libbey then went forward across the hood, striking the right side of her head on the windshield, just above the passenger’s windshield wipers, and [then she rolled] off the car to the side of the roadway,” he said.
Fizell said that Lewis and several other passers-by stopped to assist Libbey, who was treated at the scene by Holden rescue personnel and then taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by Capital Ambulance. Holden fire personnel assisted with traffic control.
Fizell said no charges are expected as a result of the crash. He said the gray skies may have contributed to Libbey not being seen, and the three other lanes of traffic may have obscured Lewis’ vision, he said.
Libbey remained at Eastern Maine Medical Center on Wednesday night.
