BANGOR, Maine – Husson University overcame five first-quarter turnovers and scored 35 second-half points to pull away for a 42-20 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference victory over Anna Maria on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
John Smith carried 28 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns to propel the offense for the Eagles (6-1, 5-0 ECFC), who maintain first place in the league standings.
Anna Maria fell to 0-8, 0-5 in the ECFC.
Smith scored on runs of 45, 4 and 38 yards, while quarterback Joe Seccareccia of Bangor had scoring throws of 57 and 21 yards to Joe Farrell, completing 8 of 24 passes for 160 yards with two interceptions.
The AMCATS had grabbed a 14-0 lead on a 1-yard TD run by Chris Bettano and Daniel Faison’s 28-yard scoring pass to Will Ricard. They went back in front in the third quarter when Faison found Ricard on a 60-yard touchdown strike at 6:34 of the third quarter.
However, Husson scored on four of its last six possessions to pull away.
Shabashe McIntosh added a 22-yard TD run for the Eagles. Farrell finished with three receptions for 85 yards.
Faison wound up 10-for-28 for 180 yards, two scores and three interceptions.
Ellis Throckmorton of Bangor registered 11 tackles to pace the defense.
Salve Regina 21, MMA 19
At Middletown, Rhode Island, Luke Gambale’s sack of Maine Maritime Academy quarterback Michael Fahey with 59 seconds left helped Salve Regina pull out the New England Football Conference win.
Sam Pascale netted 172 yards on 30 carries with touchdown runs of 17 and 18 yards for the Seahawks (4-4, 3-2 NEFC).
Maine Maritime Academy (3-4, NEFC 2-3) combined for 343 rushing yards in a 21-19 NEFC loss to Salve Regina University (4-4; 3-2 NEFC) on Saturday afternoon. Steven Wilken went 5-for-11 passing with 116 yards and a TD, a game-winning 5-yarder to Alex Hulme with 9:50 to play.
Fahey led Maine Maritime Academy of Castine (3-4, 2-3 NEFC), running for 164 yards on 37 carries. That included TD runs of 6 and 18 yards.
James Ferrrar gained 99 yards on 26 carries and Jacob Doolan picked up 80 yards on 8 carries.
John Doyon made six tackles and recovered a fumble for the Mariners.
Johnny Weymouth booted a 41-yard field goal for MMA, the second longest in program history.
Rory McEntee led the Salve Regina defense with 12 total tackles.
