MAPLETON, Maine — A Mapleton man has been charged with domestic assault and terrorizing in connection with an altercation with his girlfriend and her family last week, according to police.
Last Wednesday, Oct. 29, Aroostook County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Mapleton home Matthew Chapman, 33, shared with his girlfriend and several children, Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall said Monday in a press release.
Because she is a victim of domestic violence, the woman’s name is not being released.
On Wednesday, the victim was packing and moving her possessions out of the home with the assistance of several family members when Chapman arrived and made violent threats against her mother, Crandall said.
Chapman left before sheriff’s officers arrived, but witnesses indicated he was last seen driving toward Ashland.
Later that same day, members of the Ashland Police Department located and detained Chapman until sheriff’s deputies arrived to arrest and transport him to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
Crandall said further investigation also revealed Chapman had assaulted the girlfriend in front of two children earlier that week.
Chapman appeared in Aroostook District Court on Friday where bail was set at $500 cash and he was ordered to have no contact with his alleged victim or other family members.
Chapman remained at the Aroostook County Jail on Monday.
