HARPSWELL, Maine — A man, woman and a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy escaped major injury in Sunday’s snowstorm after a pickup truck collided with a patrol cruiser.
Deputy Robert Mailman had been assisting another motorist who had skidded off Route 24 shortly before 2 p.m. when a pickup driven by James Dyer, 23, lost control and slammed into the rear of the cruiser, Capt. Craig Smith said.
Mailman’s cruiser was parked on the side of the road with its emergency lights activated near the vehicle that had originally left the road, according to Smith. Mailman was not in the cruiser, and the original vehicle was not struck.
Dyer and his passenger, Mallory Perry, 26, were not seriously hurt, and the crash pushed Mailman’s cruiser 100 feet across the road and into a guardrail. Mailman was not hurt.
Dyer complained of neck pain and Perry, who is pregnant, complained of sore ribs. Both were transported to a local hospital. The baby is OK, Smith said.
Speed and weather appear to be factors and Dyer was apparently operating on a suspended license, according to Smith. The crash remains under investigation.
