PORTLAND, Maine — A Sanford man was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court to 10 years in prison on a child pornography charge.
In addition to prison time, U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen sentenced Richard M. Moulton Jr., 31, to 10 years of supervised release, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
He pleaded guilty in May to one count of transporting child pornography.
Moulton came to the attention of investigators in February, when Moulton sent an email message to a federal agent working undercover, according to court documents. Attached to the email were four video files depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit activity and asking: “Can u send 4 back also.”
Evidence presented at the sentencing hearing showed that Moulton frequently used his email account to solicit child pornography from others and to send child pornography videos and images, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Moulton, who was held without bail since his arrest in March, faced between five and 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Wolff recommended Moulton spend 15 years behind bars. Defense attorney Luke Rioux urged the judge to impose the minimum sentence.
The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the Sanford Police Department.
