Five Maine field hockey players gain America East honors

University of Maine field hockey seniors Annabelle Hamilton and Holly Stewart, who are both from North Vancouver, British Columbia, were selected to the America East first team by the league’s coaches with junior Nicole Sevey of Skowhegan and sophomore Danielle Aviani earning second-team accolades.

Goalie Emma Cochran was chosen to the All-Rookie team.

Stewart, Zoe Berkey and Becca Paradee were named to the league’s All-Academic team.

Stewart, Hamilton, Sevey and Aviani have all been selected to America East All-Star teams before.

Racing to resume at Bangor after storm cancels two cards

BANGOR — The harness racing cards at Bangor Raceway on Monday and Tuesday were cancelled due to the weekend snowstorm.

Racing resumes at the track at 6 p.m. Friday with a 10-race card.

Maine hockey’s 1999 team celebrating title’s anniversary

ORONO — Players from the University of Maine’s 1999 national championship men’s hockey team will celebrate the 15th anniversary of their title on Friday, Nov. 14, before the Boston University-Maine hockey game.

The team will be recognized on the ice before the start of the game, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

After the game, the Friends of Maine Hockey will host a free reception with the team. Those seeking more information may contact Cherie Damon at cdicemom2@aol.com.

Maple Leafs’ Ashton suspended 20 games

The NHL suspended Toronto Maple Leafs forward Carter Ashton for 20 games, without pay, for violating the terms of the league’s Performance Enhancing Substances Program, the league announced Thursday.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment.

Based on his average annual salary, Ashton will forfeit $169,185

Rays announce eight manager candidates

The Tampa Bay Rays announced eight early candidates to fill the managerial vacancy left by the departure of Joe Maddon to the Chicago Cubs.

One of the candidates, Raul Ibanez, is still an active player.

Besides the Royals’ Ibanez, the seven other early candidates include former Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals manager and current TV analyst Manny Acta, Indians bullpen coach Kevin Cash, Milwaukee Brewers special assistant to the general manager Craig Counsell, Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, Durham Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo, former Seattle Mariners manager and current Kansas City Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu, and San Francisco Giants bench coach Ron Wotus.
