CHARLESTON, West Virginia — The top-ranked University of Maine-Fort Kent men’s and women’s soccer teams each recorded quarterfinal victories in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s National Championships Thursday.
The UMFK men defeated No. 9 Washington Adventist 5-1 and the UMFK women shut out No. 8 West Virginia Tech 3-0.
In the women’s game, junior All American Katherine Ferland scored three goals to record a hat trick.
All three goals occurred in the second half with Ferland putting the Bengals on the scoreboard at the 51st minute. A throw-in by UMFK’s Sam Carrapellucci was mishandled by a WVU back. Ferland corralled the ball and sent it past goalkeeper Martha Reyna with her left foot.
Ferland added her second goal eight minutes later when she rebounded a miss from Yosselin Burrueco. She added her third goal off a penalty kick at the 87th minute.
UMFK’s Michelle Delgadillo saved all three shots she faced as the team recorded its 10th shutout. WVU’s Martha Reyna made two saves on five shots.
The Bengals will play at 5 p.m. Friday against No. 5 Florida College, a 3-0 winner over No. 4 Alfred State College.
In the men’s game, the Bengals surged to a 3-1 first-half lead en route to the win.
Sophomore Ben Kluvers struck first for the Bengals in the seventh minute as Jamie Reid corralled a Kluvers shot on goal at the top of the box, fed Ross Downie on the left flank and he crossed it perfectly onto Kluvers’ head for the first goal.
Milton Christopher added the second goal for UMFK off Kyle Robin’s free kick at the 17th minute and Willie Monthe contributed his first of two goals when he headed in a pass from Kluvers.
Washington Adventist did get on the scoreboard when Emmanuel Ajayi headed the ball past goalkeeper Akheim Forbes in the 22nd minute from a corner kick.
In the second half, Monthe added his 23rd goal in the 47th minute when he rebounded a Kluvers shots. James William Hone-Blanchett added an insurance goal in the 87th minute.
The Bengals will play their semifinal match against No. 4 seed Concordia-Alabama at 5 p.m. Friday.
Field Hockey
Maine 5, UNH 2
At Albany, New York, Meg Flatly scored three goals and Lindsey Nerbonne added two to power the New Hampshire Wildcats by the Maine Black Bears in an America East semifinal.
The two teams were tied 2-2 at the half, but Nerbonne opened the scoring in the second half at the 46th minute and Flatley added her third goal 10 minutes later to secure the lead. Nerbonne notched her second goal at the 66th minute.
The Black Bears scored the game’s first goal when they forced a penalty stroke at the 7:38 mark and Annabelle Hamilton cashed in on the one-on-one opportunity. Flatley equalized for UNH 1:30 later but Danielle Aviani responded for the Bears just 21 seconds for a 2-1 lead.
Flatley scored again to tie it at the 11:40 mark.
Emma Cochran made five saves for Maine (10-10, 3-2 America East) and Carlie Tarbell made six for UNH (9-11, 4-1).
UMD 1, USM 0
At North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, junior Emily Anderson scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to snap a scoreless draw and deliver a 1-0 win for the third-seeded UMass Dartmouth Corsairs over the seventh-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey tourney semifinal
UMD outshot USM 9-2and had a 21-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Amanda Kashbohm made nine saves for USM (9-13) and Liz St. Germaine had two for UMD (12-10).
Football
Washington dismisses Peters
Washington junior cornerback Marcus Peters was dismissed from the program following a heated argument with an assistant coach during Wednesday’s practice.
Peters, who served a one-game suspension earlier in the 2014 season, is ranked the 13th overall prospect for the 2015 NFL Draft by nfldraftscout.com.
Head coach Chris Petersen confirmed Peters’ dismissal. Petersen also said Washington will continue to provide Peters’ scholarship through the completion of his education.
Peters’ previous suspension for the Illinois game was punishment for a sideline tirade during the Huskies game against Eastern Washington.
NOTES: Running back B.J. Catalon, TCU’s leading rusher, has not practiced all week because of an upper-torso injury and is questionable for Saturday’s key Big 12 game against Kansas State, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.Catalon suffered the injury in the closing minutes of TCU’s victory over West Virginia.
