AUGUSTA, Maine — Two women were hospitalized Tuesday after a head-on collision on Route 17, according to police.
Salley Beane, 49, of Manchester and Lucretia Smith, 51, of Rockland are both listed in critical condition at area hospitals, according to Augusta police Lt. Christopher Massey.
Beane was traveling east and Smith was heading west, and they were the lone occupants of the vehicles, according to Massey. The crash occurred near Rebecca’s Restaurant around 10 a.m.
Beane and Smith both had to be extricated from their vehicles, according to Massey. A LifeFlight helicopter transported Beane to Lewiston’s Central Maine Medical Center.
A second LifeFlight helicopter could not make it to the scene due to weather, and Smith was taken by ambulance to Alfond Medical Center in Augusta and later to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
