BANGOR, Maine — The Saint Joseph’s College Monks battled to a six-point lead in the second overtime and then held off the Husson University Eagles for an 82-78 women’s basketball victory Thursday night at Newman Gym.
St. Joe’s surged to a 74-70 lead a minute into second overtime, but Husson tied it when Victoria McIntyre and Denae Johnson each scored inside with 3:13 left.
The Monks then outscored the Eagles 6-2, capped by two Sarah Assante free throws with 17 seconds left for an 82-76 lead. A McIntyre layup at the buzzer accounted for the final margin.
Husson sent the game into the second extra session when Chandler Guerrette made one of two free throws to tie it at 70 with 34 seconds left.
The two teams were tied 32-32 at halftime and 60-60 at the end of regulation.
Morgan Cahill poured in 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to spark St. Joe’s of Standish, now 3-0. Kehoe chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Norma Waggett recorded 10 points and 14 rebounds. Assante finished with eight points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Katy Brochu came off the bench to score 22 points and grab 11 rebounds for the Eagles, now 0-2. She also blocked five shots. Stephanie Comstock and McIntyre each added 13 points and Guerrette netted 12. Comstock and McIntyre also each had nine rebounds.
Bates 97, UMF 61
At Lewiston, the Bobcats blew the game open with a 28-6 run in a nine-minute stretch early in the first half for a 31-10 advantage en route to the win over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers.
Chelsea Nason sparked Bates (3-1) with 17 points while Molly Brown and Bernadette Connors each put in 14. Brown also recorded six rebounds and five assists and Connors had five assists.
Meghan Smith paced UMF (0-3) with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. Kelly Pomerleau added 12 points and Elizabeth Ferry netted 10.
Bates led at the half 50-31.
Men’s Basketball
Husson 68, St. Joseph’s 66
At Newman Gym in Bangor, Husson took a five-point lead at halftime and then held on to beat the Monks of Standish in a mutual opener.
The Eagles increased their lead to as much as seven in the second half, but the Monks battled back and took a 60-58 lead when Quinn Richardson-Newton hit a layup with 7:39 left.
Husson answered as Raheem Anderson and Mitch Worcester hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 64-60 advantage a minute later.
The Eagles wouldn’t give up the lead the rest of the way and St. Joe’s missed a chance to win it at the buzzer when Steve Simonds missed a 3-pointer.
Trevon Butler paced Husson with 19 points and four steals. Anderson chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds and Eli Itkin added 11 points.
Simonds finished with 26 points and eight rebounds to lead St. Joe’s. Richardson-Newton added 11 points.
NHTI 124, CMCC 120
At Auburn, Xavier Colbert tipped in a missing free throw with 2.9 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime where New Hampshire Tech edged Central Maine Community College.
Both teams traded baskets before the Lynx jumped up by four points and held that lead to the buzzer.
Carrington Miller knocked out his fourth double double of the season hitting for 29 points and hauling down 15 rebounds to spark CMCC. Colbert also banged notched a double double with 30 points and 10 rebounds.
NC State 79, Jacksonville 42
Caleb Martin scored 12 of his team-high 15 points in the first half and BeeJay Anya set a single-game school record with 10 blocked shots as the Wolfpack had an easy time with the visiting Dolphins.
Martin came off the bench to shoot 6-for-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range while Anya dominated the interior with seven points and eight rebounds. Anya’s 10 blocks erased the school record held by former Wolfpack big men Todd Fuller and Thurl Bailey who each had nine.
Jacksonville (1-3) was led by Josh Adeyeye with 15 points while Kori Babineaux and J.R. Holder each scored eight points. But on a night where NC State didn’t give Jacksonville many clean looks Adeyeye, Babineaux, and Holder combined to shoot 9-for-33.
