MADISON, Maine — A warehouse at Campbell’s Building Supply on Main Street was gutted by fire Thursday, but a quick report by employees likely kept it from spreading to the business.

“The workers at Campbell’s did the right thing,” said Madison Fire Chief Shawn Howard.

Employees were locking up shortly after 5 p.m. and getting ready to head home when smoke was spotted and a truck inside the warehouse was found ablaze, Howard said.

The warehouse and the store itself were not connected, Howard said. Campbell’s Building Supply was open for business Friday, he added.

Employees immediately called 911, the chief said, and firefighters from four communities were able to keep it from spreading to the store.

Howard said the warehouse was used to store building supplies. A mechanical issue with the truck in the warehouse is the likely culprit of the blaze, which is being deemed accidental.

“We cannot rule out an issue with the block heater on that truck,” Howard said.

Nobody was injured, Howard said, and firefighters from Madison, Skowhegan, Anson and Norridgewock responded, while New Portland covered Anson’s station.
