CAMDEN, Maine — The superintendent of the Camden-area school systems is retiring at the end of the school year.
Elaine Nutter, who is in her second year as superintendent of both the Five-Town Community School District and School Administrative District 28, said Thursday that it was difficult to submit her resignation because of her deep affection for the staff and community.
“The job demands and deserves substantial energy all the time,” Nutter said, adding that she did not feel she could continue with that level of energy.
Her resignation was accepted Wednesday evening by the Community School District board.
Nutter said she was making the announcement to give the school board adequate time to find someone else and for her to work with that person to help with the transition before she leaves in June.
The Five-Town Community School District serves the high school for Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville, Hope and Appleton. SAD 28 operates the kindergarten through eighth grade programs in Camden and Rockport.
She succeeded William Shuttleworth.
Nutter has been in education for 44 years. She served 27 years with neighboring SAD 40 and eight years with the former Union 132 that served Jefferson, Chelsea and Whitefield. She also served as assistant superintendent of the Camden-area schools for one year before being hired as the top administrator.
