ROCKLAND, Maine — A fire that damaged an apartment last month is suspected of having started when two visitors to the residence were cooking a mixture of marijuana and butane on the stove.
The two people suspected of cooking the mixture referred to as “honey oil” are named in an affidavit filed in Rockland District Court by investigator Mary MacMaster of the state fire marshal’s office. The BDN is not naming them, however, because the two have not been charged with a crime yet.
The affidavit was filed to acquire a warrant in order to search the property after the fire.
The mixture was being cooked on a stovetop when the glass being used for cooking broke, causing a small explosion that injured both people, according to MacMaster. The fire also activated the sprinkler system, which doused the kitchen with water.
The apartment is in the Stevens Green complex located off Lovejoy and Thomaston streets. The fire occurred at about 2 p.m. on Nov. 16. One person was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in a private vehicle while the second was taken there by a Rockland ambulance.
The affidavit indicated that witnesses reported hearing what sounded like an explosion and then the sprinkler system kicking in. The apartment experienced water and smoke damage.
