BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University Eagles cruised to a 25-point halftime lead to take a 92-38 women’s basketball victory over the Green Mountain College Eagles in a North Atlantic Conference contest Friday night at Newman Gym.
Stephanie Comstock and Samira Cruz each scored 16 points to lead Husson (3-2, 3-0 NAC). Taylor Blood chipped in with 15 points, Denae Johnson put in 12 and Chandler Guerrette netted 11. Guerrette and Miranda Drinkwater each notched 8 assists to help Husson gain a 32-6 advantage.
Husson scored 42 points off 34 Green Mountain turnovers and held a commanding 43-29 rebounding edge. Husson shot 47.4 percent from the field while holding Green Mountain to 36.8 percent.
Allison Wadsworth paced Green Mountain (0-4, 0-3) with 15 points, Torie Cowell added 12 and Amber Heath netted 11.
Castleton 70, MMA 46
At Castine, Jade Desroches scored 20 points, including a 4-for-7 effort from 3-point land to power Castleton State by Maine Martime Academy.
Lindsay Sabo added 14 points for Castleton (6-1, 3-0 NAC) and Meghan O’Sullivan netted 12. Castleton outrebounded MMA 47-23.
Mary Badeen paced MMA (2-5, 0-3) with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Kristi Willey contributed with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 points.
Men’s Basketball
Husson 84, Green Mountain 65
At Bangor, Matt Talbot notched a double-double and Husson used a 20-6 run to open the second half en route to the win at Newman Gym.
The Eagles improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in NAC play while Green Mountain falls to 1-6 and 1-2 in league play.
The Eagles took a 40-34 lead at half courtesy of seven points from Jacob Moore and six points and seven rebounds from Talbot. The Eagles shot 42.5 percent in the first stanza while Green Mountain shot 46.7 percent.
In the second half, after Green Mountain scored the first bucket, Husson called timeout and regrouped before going on the run, capped by a Connor Adams layup that made it 60-42 with 12 minutes left in the game.
Green Mountain would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way as Husson cruised to the win.
Moore finished with 13 points to lead the Husson scoring attack. Raheem Anderson added 12 points and nine rebounds while Aaron Willis had 12 points and five assists.
Cameron Anderson led Green Mountain with 20 points.
Bowdoin 72, UMF 41
At Farmington, Bowdoin’s Lucas Hausman and Bryan Hurley outscored the University of Maine-Farmington by themselves as the Polar Bear men’s basketball team cruised to the win over UMaine-Farmington.
Bowdoin closes out its first semester with a record of 5-2. Maine-Farmington falls to 2-5 with the loss.
Hausman led all players with 23 points while Hurley scored 19 for the Polar Bears. Hurley added four steals while John Swords finished with seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Uriah Forest-Bulley led Farmington with 16 points.
Bowdoin quickly opened a ten-point lead and held UMF to just five points over the first 15 minutes of play. The Polar Bears took a 36-14 edge at halftime thanks to a dominating 24-8 edge on the glass and a tenacious defense that held the Beavers to just 4-22 (18.2 percent) from the field.
The Polar Bears coasted in the second half, leading by as many as 32 points. Bowdoin finished at 47.5 percent shooting for the contest and owned a 44-21 advantage in rebounding. Farmington connected on just 28.9 percent (13-45) for the game.
Castleton 81, MMA 61
At Castine, Maine Maritime (1-7, 0-3) fell to North Atlantic Conference opponent Castleton (4-3, 2-1) at Smith Gymnasium.
The Mariners used back-to-back Nick Holt 3-pointers and five points from Jason Hatch to jump out to an 11-8 lead early in the game. The Spartans responded with a 14-unanswered points to build a substantial 22-11 lead. Maine Maritime continued to fight, but Castleton took a 42-22 lead into the half.
Castleton jumped out to a 50-25 lead following a nine-point run in the second half, Maine Maritime closed the gap to 17 points with a little under four minutes remaining in the game, but the lead was too big to come back from and the Spartans took the win.
Holt scored a game-high 14 points for the Mariners, while Kyle Boucher grabbed 11 points off the bench.
The Spartans were led by Carnelius Green who had a team-high eight points, while Tyler Arsenault added seven points off the bench.
