Mullin resists overtures to coach Kings
The Sacramento Kings want Chris Mullin to take over for fired Mike Malone as their head coach, but the Basketball Hall of Famer is not inclined to leave his role as an adviser this season, according to reports Tuesday.
Mullin is not interested with the season already under way because he would like to assemble his own coaching staff and start fresh during training camp. Reports indicated that there’s a far better chance that Mullin, who has no head coaching experience, would take the job next season.
The Kings (11-13) fired Malone on Sunday. Ty Corbin was named interim coach. Corbin coaches his first game on Tuesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
There is also speculation that George Karl, 63, might be a candidate for the job.
Herman hired as Houston coach
Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman will become the new head coach at the University of Houston, but first he plans to finish his job with the Buckeyes in the first College Football Playoff.
Herman, who was hired by Ohio State in December 2011, last week received the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach.
Herman, 39, signed a five-year, $6.75 million contract with Houston to return to the state in which he spent the first 10 years of his coaching career.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for my family and I to come back to Houston and lead one of the top programs in the country,” Herman said.
Youngstown State hires Bo Pelini
Bo Pelini, fired by Nebraska after seven seasons, will be named head coach at Youngstown State University.
Multiple reports in Ohio said an official announcement would be made as soon as Tuesday.
Reports of the possibility were shot down recently by Pelini, who is known to be bristly with media, who labeled the headlines “a complete fabrication.”
Pelini, 47, is a Youngstown native and former Ohio State defensive back.
Pelini was 67-27 at Nebraska. He will replace Eric Wolford, who was fired after going 7-5 in 2014.
Winnipeg loses another defenseman
The Winnipeg Jets will be without defenseman Jacob Trouba until at least February because of an upper-body injury, the team announced Tuesday.
Injuries have hit the Jets’ hard on the blue line. Tobias Enstrom and Zach Bogosian are also out with upper-body injuries and neither is expected back until early to mid-January.
Trouba played in the Jets’ 4-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, but it’s uncertain how he was injured.
The 20-year-old Trouba leads Jets defensemen in scoring this season with 12 points and is averaging more than 23 minutes of ice time in 31 games.
Last season, Trouba had a neck injury that forced him to the sideline.
