AUGUSTA, Maine — A 67-year-old Greene man remained at the Kennebec County Jail on Christmas Eve unable to post $10,000 cash bail after being accused of causing a standoff late Tuesday.

Douglass McCaig, who also lives in Vero Beach, Florida, is charged with one count each of failing to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, operating under the influence of intoxicants, criminal threatening, refusing to submit to arrest and creating a police standoff, according to a news release issued Wednesday by the Monmouth Police Department.

The incident that led to the charges began about 11 p.m. Tuesday when Officer Richard Alexander stopped a car on Route 202 for a motor vehicle violation, the news release said. McCaig allegedly became aggressive and uncooperative. He drove away from Alexander but nearly struck the officer as he did, the release stated.

When Alexander managed to pull the car over again, McCaig allegedly made threats to harm himself and the officers, according to Monmouth police.

The Maine State Police Tactical Team was called and Route 202 between Blue Road and Route 132 was closed for 3½ hours before McCaig was taken into custody, the release said.
