BREWER, Maine — The longtime local barber who was struck by a vehicle while walking to work on the morning of Dec. 20 died Monday at a Bangor hospital, a Brewer police official has confirmed.

David Grant, 73, of Brewer had been listed in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center since he was was hit at about 6:30 a.m. while crossing the street near his barbershop, located at 96 North Main St., according to Brewer police.

Jason Moffitt, deputy chief of the Brewer Police Department, said that Grant was struck by a 2005 Chevy Cobalt driven by Maria Mann, 42, of Bucksport. It was the second time in a year that Grant had been struck crossing the street in the same location.

The investigation and accident reconstruction are still underway but will be turned over to the Penobscot County district attorney’s office once completed, Brewer police Lt. Chris Martin said Tuesday.

It will be up to prosecutors to determine if charges are filed, he said.

A barber for 53 years, Grant was a graduate of Cherryfield Academy and Hanson’s Barber School, as well as a U.S. Army veteran, according to his obituary. He belonged to the Essex Street Baptist Church, the Masons and the Anah Shriners.

Grant, who was predeceased by his late wife Susan (Bolster) Grant, is survived by his children Kriss Evans of Stetson, Kevin Grant of Brewer and their families; brothers Don Grant of Orono and Jim Grant of Michigan and sisters Violet Harrington and Polly Craft of Cherryfield, the obituary said.

Visiting hours are set for 5-7 p.m. Friday at Brookings-Smith at 133 Central St. in Bangor, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Gifts in Grant’s memory may be made to the Bangor Masonic Foundation, 294 Union St., Suite 1, Bangor, ME 04401.
