FAYETTE, Maine — A Livermore woman was killed Monday morning when a propane truck overturned and struck her vehicle on Route 17, according to police.
Diane Gould, 45, died while en route to a hospital, according to Maj. Ryan Reardon of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash was reported shortly after 8 a.m., according to Reardon. Propane was leaking from a truck from Downeast Energy driven by Alan Cheney, 52, who was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Reardon said the propane truck lost control on a sharp downhill curve and struck Gould’s vehicle, which was traveling in the opposite lane. The impact caused the truck to flip over and crush Gould’s vehicle.
Gould had to be extricated from her vehicle, Reardon said. The crash occurred about a half-mile west of the Fayette Central School.
Road conditions and speed are likely factors, as their was a significant amount of ice on the road, Reardon said. The road was sanded shortly after the accident.
Nearby residents had to leave their homes for a short period of time due to the propane leak from the truck, and another truck from Downeast Energy was called in to take the remaining propane from Cheney’s truck, Reardon explained.
The road remained closed Monday afternoon and a state police commercial inspection team is assisting with reconstruction of the crash, Reardon said.
