BANGOR, Maine — The Bowdoin College Polar Bears surged to a 13-point first-half lead to take an 81-51 women’s basketball victory over the Husson University Eagles Tuesday night at Newman Gym.
Sara Binkhorst paced Bowdoin (16-2) with 15 points while Emily Campbell chipped in with 11. Megan Phelps contributed with 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocked shots and 8 points.
The Polar Bears outrebounded the Eagles 40-22 and capitalized by scoring 35 points off 26 Husson turnovers.
Chandler Guerrette sparked Husson (8-6) with 13 points and Victoria McIntyre chipped in with 12 points and 4 rebounds.
USM 67, Plymouth St. 61
At Plymouth, New Hampshire, senior Stephanie Gallagher scored a career-high 17 points to spark the University of Southern Maine Huskies by the Plymouth State University Panthers in overtime in a Little East Conference game.
Junior Jillian Madden scored a career-best 10 points, including four points in the overtime period for USM (8-8 overall, 4-2 LEC). USM outscored Plymouth State in overtime 11-5.
Junior Ella Ramonas added a team-high 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Senior Rebecca Knight added eight points, four assists and a pair of steals.
Plymouth State sophomore Ace Lawrence paced the Panthers (6-9, 0-5) with a game-high 24 points for the Panthers.
EMCC 53, UMM 46
At Bangor, Jordan Maxwell recorded 17 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 steals and 4 blocked shots to propel Eastern Maine Community College by UMaine-Machias.
Morgan Card chipped in with 10 points and 16 rebounds for EMCC while Bobbie-Lynne Chambers contributed 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 7 steals.
Ami Carver paced UMM with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brooklynne Lewis added 10 points.
Men’s Basketball
Colby 86, MMA 64
At Waterville, the Mules shot 57 percent from the field and outrebounded the Mariners 35-20 to take a nonleague victory.
Sam Willson’s 17 points and eight rebounds paced Colby College of Waterville (11-6), which received 13 points from Chris Hudnut. Luke Westman and Joe Connelly added nine points each.
Nick Holt went 5-for-9 from long range on his way to a game-high 19 points for Maine Maritime Academy of Castine (1-14). Dylan Price netted 14 points and Tyler Gilson posted 10.
UMM 91, EMCC 48
At Bangor, five players hit high double-figure scoring to power the University of Maine-Machias Clippers by the Eastern Maine Community College Golden Eagles.
Floyd Higgins and Dreu Johnson each scored 15 points for UMM while Ivory Sneed added 12. Dave Kalmbach and Antwan Rulse each added 10 points.
Brian Getchell grabbed 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who outrebounded the Eagles 51-32.
Keyshawn Hampton paced EMCC with 12 points, Myles Safford added 11 and Brett Deniger netted 10.
Syracuse 69, BC 61
Michael Gbinije broke out of a slump with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lift the host Orange.
Trevor Cooney added 15 points while Kaleb Joseph supplied 13 points and seven assists for Syracuse (14-5, 5-1 ACC), which has won eight of its last nine games. The Orange missed eight free throws as the Eagles whittled a 14-point deficit with just over two minutes left down to six points in the final minute, but Syracuse survived the scare.
Aaron Brown scored 21 points as Boston College (8-9, 0-5) shot 31.4 percent in suffering its fifth setback in six games. Dimitri Batten pitched in 17 points for the Eagles, while Olivier Hanlan added 13 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Gbinije and Rakeem Christmas outscored BC by themselves in the first half, combining for 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting as the Orange led 35-17 at the break. BC jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but then made only two field goals over the final 14:45 of the half, finishing the period at 5-of-23 shooting with eight turnovers.
The Eagles chipped away early in the second half, getting within 40-31 before Cooney and Gbinije each knocked down a 3-pointer to restore a 15-point cushion. Hanlan’s layup brought BC within 10 with about six minutes to go, but Christmas’ three-point play and a pair of Cooney foul shots stretched the margin once again.
Michigan 54, Rutgers 50
Derrick Walton Jr. scored 10 of his 12 points in the final 5:55 as the visiting Wolverines pulled out a gritty victory over the Scarlet Knights in Big Ten play.
Aubrey Dawkins added 11 points for Michigan (12-7, 5-2) filling in for injured star Caris LeVert, who is out for the season with a broken foot. Zak Irvin tallied 10 points and Walton pulled down eight rebounds for the Wolverines, who survived 34.7 percent shooting from the floor.
Myles Mack led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds for Rutgers (10-10, 2-5), which couldn’t overcome a 35.8 percent performance from the field. Kadeem Jack chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds for the Scarlet Knights, who have dropped three straight games.
Irvin connected from beyond the arc and nailed a jumper as part of an 8-0 run to give Michigan its biggest lead of the game at 32-25 before D.J. Foreman came off the bench to spark a 15-2 surge to put Rutgers in front by six with just under 8 1/2 minutes remaining. Walton drained two straight 3-pointers before Max Bielfeldt added one of his own to put the Wolverines back on top 48-42, and Walton sank four three throws in the final 40 seconds to preserve the win.
