ROCKLAND, Maine — The race for the Maine House seat vacated by Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Dickerson continues to attract candidates.
First-term Councilor Valli Geiger announced Saturday she decided to put her name forward for the Democratic nomination. The Democrats have yet to announce a date for a caucus, but it must be held before Feb. 9.
The special election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10.
Geiger was elected in November to a three-year term on City Council. The Rockland woman said she would remain on the council if elected to the Legislature.
She said Gov. Paul LePage’s proposal to eliminate revenue sharing prompted her to enter the race.
Geiger is the fourth candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. The others are Pinny “Anne” Beebe Center, a former county commissioner; Steve Roberts, Regional School Unit 13 board chairman; and Carol Bachofner, an RSU 13 board member.
The announced Republican candidate is James Kalloch, who operates Penobscot Bay Ferry and Transport out of Rockland and who lost narrowly (1,744 to 1,612) to Dickerson in November.
The Republicans announced Saturday they would hold a district-wide caucus 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2 at the Tradewinds Motor Inn in Rockland.
Also announced is Shawn Levasseur, who is a Libertarian activist but an unenrolled candidate.
Unenrolled candidates have until Feb. 9 to file their nomination papers with the Maine Secretary of State.
