SCARBOROUGH, MAINE — A residence on Powderhorn Lane was damaged by fire on Wednesday morning, according to Scarborough Fire Chief Michael Thurlow.
Scarborough firefighters were dispatched to fight the blaze shortly before 10:30 a.m., Thurlow said.
A mother and two children managed to get out safely, the fire chief said. The initial call came in as an issue with a furnace, but shortly after, another call came in indicating a carbon monoxide detector was going off and smoke was smelled.
When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from the garage, but crews were able to get it under control in about 10 minutes, Thurlow said. A cause has not been determined.
The fire was contained to the garage, which Thurlow said was significantly damaged. The garage had no working smoke detectors inside of it, and Thurlow said it’s always a good idea to have them there.
No mutual aid was required.
