BANGOR, Maine — Husson University head women’s soccer coach and sports information director Carly Gettler has accepted a new coaching position in Richmond, Virginia, and will be departing Husson on Feb. 6.
She will be coaching in the Richmond Strikers’ club program and will be doing website and social media development for the club, which is for youngsters of all ages.
Gettler played two years in the program before moving on to play at the University of Richmond.
Her new position will allow her to pursue multiple club and collegiate opportunities in Virginia.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision because of my players at Husson. I’m proud of everything they’ve accomplished, and they are poised to do some amazing things the next few years,” Gettler said in a news release. “They are a fantastic group of young women, and it has been an honor to coach them.”
She said her new job “will let me really focus on coaching and getting on the field a lot. Personally, it’s a real good fit. I’m very familiar with the soccer community in Richmond. It is really growing.”
In three seasons at Husson, Gettler led the women’s soccer program to three consecutive North Atlantic Conference semifinal appearances while posting an 18-8-1 conference record.
Her teams have won a National Soccer Coaches Association of America gold team ethics and sportsmanship Award, two silver team ethics awards, and two National Soccer Coaches Association of America team academic awards.
The 2014 squad had a 12-8 overall record and featured 18 freshmen and sophomores, three All-NAC team honorees and two National Soccer Coaches Association of America College Division Women’s Scholar All-East Region Team selections.
“We appreciate Carly’s dedication and commitment to Husson women’s soccer. Our program made great progress under her leadership. We wish her the very best in her future endeavors,” Husson director of athletics Frank Pergolizzi said.
A national search for Gettler’s replacement is underway.
