The Orono High School boys basketball team has been awarded a forfeit victory over Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln by the Eastern Maine B-C-D Basketball Committee, Maine Principals’ Association executive director Dick Durost said Thursday.

The game was scheduled to be played Monday night but was originally postponed in the aftermath of incidents during Mattanawcook Academy’s home game last Friday against Houlton.

Videos put on social media after that game showed several incidents of rough play by the Lynx, which led Monday to the resignation of Mattanawcook Academy head coach Ryan Libby and the indefinite suspension of two players.

When Orono and Mattanawcook officials initially couldn’t agree on a makeup date for their scheduled game, Mattanawcook offered to forfeit the contest, Durost said.

On Wednesday, the Eastern B-C-D panel, a subcommittee of the MPA’s basketball committee, approved the forfeit request. Orono subsequently was awarded a 2-0 victory as prescribed by National Federation of State High School Associations basketball rules, according to Durost.

Orono is now 9-5 and ranked seventh in Eastern Maine Class C entering Thursday night’s game at Old Town. Mattanawcook is 1-14 and scheduled to host Schenck of East Millinocket in its next game Friday night.
