Seahawks’ Sherman to have Tommy John surgery

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday that cornerback Richard Sherman’s left elbow will require Tommy John surgery and cornerback Jeremy Lane has a “significant” broken arm.

ESPN’s John Clayton reported early Monday morning after the Super Bowl that Sherman could be headed for Tommy John surgery on his elbow.

“From what I understand that is accurate,” Carroll said of Sherman. “His will to play through this never wavered.”

Sherman tore ligaments in the elbow during the Seahawks’ win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game. He finished that game in pain, seemingly playing with his left arm unavailable, then made it all the way through the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Hall of Famer Sapp arrested

Hall of Fame defensive lineman Warren Sapp was arrested Monday morning in Phoenix for soliciting a prostitute and assault.

Two female victims suffered minor injuries in the alleged assault, Phoenix Police Chief Joseph Yahner said, according to FOXSports.com.

Sapp, 42, was in Arizona to cover the Super Bowl for NFL Network, which suspended him Monday after news of the arrest.

Sapp, who has worked for NFL Network since 2008, is suspended without pay “pending the outcome of ongoing police investigation,” NFL Network spokesperson Alex Riethmiller said.

Sapp also was arrested in 2010 and 2014 on charges of domestic battery. The 2010 charges were dropped.

Sapp is the second TV analyst to be arrested for soliciting a prostitute recently. Greg Anthony, a former NBA player who works for CBS, was arrested Jan. 16 in Washington.

Mavs’ Rondo suffers two fractures

Dallas Mavericks point guard Rajon Rondo suffered an orbital fracture in his left eye as well as a nasal fracture during the game at Orlando on Saturday and will miss at least three games.

The Mavericks announced Monday morning that Rondo will miss Monday night’s home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves and will not travel with the team this week to Golden State and Sacramento while undergoing additional testing and evaluation.

Rondo suffered the injury in the first quarter of Saturday night’s win against the Magic.

The injury occurred when Rondo tripped and was accidentally kneed in the face by teammate Richard Jefferson. Jefferson did not see Rondo on the floor as he started to sprint down the court on a fast break.

With blood pouring out of his nose, Rondo stayed down on the court for about a minute before being escorted to the locker room by the Mavs’ athletic training staff.

In 20 games since being acquired by Dallas from the Boston Celtics on Dec. 18, Rondo is averaging 9.7 points and 6.9 assists, while shooting 40 percent from the floor.

Boston minor-leaguer suspended

Ricardo Cubillan, a shortstop in the Boston Red Sox organization, was suspended for 76 games and three other minor-leaguers were penalized 50 games Monday for positive drug tests, the baseball commissioner’s office announced.

The 50-game suspensions went to San Francisco Giants right-handed pitcher Ethan Miller and free-agent infielders Wilson Betemit and Tanner Norton.

Cubillan tested positive for Nandrolone, a performance-enhancing substance. Cubillan, who plays for the Class A Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League, will begin his suspension at the start of the NYPL season.

Miller tested positive for an amphetamine. He will start his suspension when the Class A Northwest League begins play. He is on the roster of the Salem-Kaizer Volcanoes.

Betemit and Norton will begin suspensions if/when they sign with teams.

Betemit also tested positive for an amphetamine, and Norton had a second positive test for a “drug of abuse.”

MLB has suspended 30 minor-leaguers this year, including 17 in the past week or so.

Four wounded in post-Super Bowl gunfight in California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Four people were shot and wounded and a fifth was badly beaten during a street brawl and gunfight that erupted late on Sunday in the aftermath of a Super Bowl party in Sacramento, police said.

Alcohol was a factor in the violence, which unfolded about 11:30 p.m. outside a home where a Super Bowl party had been held earlier in the evening, authorities said. Investigators were looking into whether the altercation was gang-related, police said on Monday.

Officers responding to reports of multiple gunshots found two men and two women with serious but non-life threatening gunshot wounds, while a fifth person required medical treatment for a physical assault, according to police.

Sacramento police officer Justin Brown said a number of people were detained in connection with the incident but no arrests had yet been made.
